Quilts of Valor
Thinking of donating a quilt to be presented to a Veteran, keep in mind that generally speaking, the sizes range for Quilts of Valor are: not less than 55" x 65"; and, not larger than 72" x 90".

Quilts of Valor (QOV) Award Ceremony December 9h, 2023
The Ocean Waves Singing Quilters welcomed QOV Recipient, Captain Luis Rolle by singing the Army Song!
Captain Rolle was taken aback by the Quilt and receiving such a warm welcome and recognition from our OW Members. His guests, -- (Mother, daughter and Vet Center Staff), -- shared the Award Ceremony with us.
VA Vet Center Personnel willingly offer to serve as a connector between QOV and Veterans who are deserving of such a recognition.
Special thanks and appreciation to you, our OW Members, for your continued support of Quilts of Valor.

Quilts of Valor (QOV) Presentation - November 2022
Joyce Cotner, Linda Falls, Barbara Garvine
Our Ocean Waves members met in person and virtually for November’s memorable Quilt of Valor Award Ceremony.
Three Patriotic Quilts were Awarded to Veterans: one to Beverly Rouse, who served at the end of WWII; one to Martha Perez, an Operation Decisive Endeavor Vet; and one to a Vietnam Veteran, Al LaVoie.
I believe Beverly’s quilt was made by Betty Roxborough; Martha’s quilt was made by Barbara Garvine, (quilting by Quiltographic); and, Al’s quilt was made by Susan Tatum and quilted by Darla Borden.
Martha Perez, and her family members, were especially delighted with our Ocean Waves Quilt Guild and plan to join! Welcome, Martha and family!
A reporter and writer, Charlie Hudson, from the South Dade News Leader, covered the Presentation. The article was published on November 18, 2022. (https://www.southdadenewsleader.com/eedition/page-a03/page_dd3784bb-6fb3-513a-8f2b-ae15cd31431c.html)
A particular Thank You for all the behind the scenes support from Dr. Anthony Atwood, Miami-Dade Military Museum Director, Candy Winfrey, Peg Waring, Connie Scheel, Janet Wetzel, Olga Leon, Linda Falls and, Barbara Garvine.
The Miami-Dade Military Museum was a perfect venue to host our well-attended OW General Membership Meeting and the Awards Ceremony. We’ve been invited back and are planning a March Quilt of Valor Sit n’ Sew Day to be held at the Museum.
In addition to the above presentation, Mary Jo Robles made and presented a Quilt of Valor to family friend SFC (Staff Sargent First Class) Donald Fabian in his home Georgia since he was unable travel to Miami at this time. Donald has 33 years in service, with 5 deployments in Iraq. He has Top Secret Clearance and trains troops. Don has 25 awards and medals including A Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Ocean Waves Guild Members have been exceptionally supportive with making and donating beautifully handmade original patriotic and non-patriotic quilts. These quilts help show our veterans that their sacrifice and service is appreciated with something very American and very tangible.
The veterans, who have served in present conflicts, (Iraq and Afghanistan), as well as past wars, (WWII, Korea and Vietnam) are identified by their family members, friends, and/or co-workers.
In Presentation Ceremonies at the Ocean Waves Guild Meetings and at Homestead Air Reserve Base the QOV Committee has awarded over 30 originally crafted Quilts of Valor to deserving service members who have served in war zones. (In recognition of Military Appreciation Month in May and Veterans Day in November the Presentation Ceremonies are held twice a year.)
The non-profit Quilts of Valor Foundation website. www.qovf.org, provides one way to catch our veterans in our QOV net of comfort, love and healing.

In recognition of May's Military Appreciation Month, three Quilts of Valor were awarded at an in person event on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB).
The 3 recipients were all Active Reserve Duty Service Members. Two had served at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar and the other served in Syria.
Interestingly Linda Falls, Barbara Garvine and I met our military escort at the HARB Visitor Control Center about 7:10 AM, -- (yes, it was a bit early). Our well attended presentations went off with "military precision" and were very well received.
Two of the Quilts were made by Betty Roxborough and the other by Ellen Sherman. A special Thank You to all our Ocean Waves Members for your continued support of Quilts of Valor.

Thanks to the incredibly generous support from East Ridge Personnel and you, our Ocean Waves Members, our hybrid Quilts of Valor Awards’ Ceremony during the November 2021 meeting was memorable!
Three Patriotic Quilts were Awarded: one each to a WWII vet, a Vietnam vet and an Operation Enduring Freedom vet. A reporter, Charlie Hudson, from the South Dade News Leader covered the Presentation and her article can be read online here.
A particularly heart-rending moment was when Seth Tellez, Operation Enduring Freedom veteran, wanted to hug his quilt at the end of the ceremony, -- he did not want us to fold his quilt.
A particular Thank You for all the behind scenes support from Connie Scheel, Helen McKane and Betty Roxborough.
