July Fourth is the "biggest hot dog holiday of the year" with Americans consuming about 155 million of them on Independence Day alone. This is unlike our forefathers, who were eating items like turtle soup, poached salmon with egg sauce, green peas, boiled new potatoes in jackets and Indian pudding for a celebratory meal. How times change! Some of our Ocean Waves members will be spending part of the holiday at the 50th Annual Cutler Bay/Whispering Pines 4th of July Celebration, 8800 Ridgeland Drive. This is an opportunity for the Guild to fulfill our goal of promoting interest in making, collecting and preserving quilts. Another opportunity is the Cowboy Day display at Redland Fruit and Spice Park on July 22. There is still time to complete that cowboy quilt you started ages ago and display it on Cowboy Day.
I was not able to stay and learn how to make the tote bag last month, but judging by the Facebook posts of completed tote bags, it comes together pretty easily. Don't forget to visit our Facebook page, Ocean Waves Quilt Guild. There are pictures of members’ projects, meeting news and Gary actually posted a video of his 4th of July project. Two thumbs up!
Marcia Baraldi returns in July with an English version of her new book. Everyone was very happy with the classes offered the last time she was here. She will be offering 3 classes this time; refer to the Programs article or the website, www.oceanwavesquilters.com for more details. I will demonstrate how to make a Christmas ornament that I think would be appropriate for the Deering Estate project. Bring 4 strips of coordinating fabrics cut into 12 x 3 1/4 strips, iron the strips so they are like double-fold bias tape. (Fold in half, then fold the edges in to the center, and iron again.
I will be visiting the VA Hospital sometime in late July or early August, and taking the wheelchair quilts that were made from the "ugly fabric". If you have any other wheelchair quilts to donate to the VA Hospital please bring them to the July 8th meeting. The We Care Quilters are making and collecting baby quilts for a September Baby Shower being planned by the VA Hospital, maybe turn one of those UFOs you have into a baby quilt and donate it.
Have a safe summer!
