Ocean Waves Chapter NQA
Coral Gables Congregational Church Quilters
History: This guild has a long history including working with Ocean Waves on a
quilt show when it was held at the Church years ago.
Purposes and Activities: Originally to hand -quilt quilts for raffles and for each
other. Currently the main focus is making and tying quilts for Bay Point School.
Group's Accomplishments: Working in conjunction with We Care Quilters, we
have delivered 279 tied quilts to Bay Point School. Also activities to benefit the
church's Woman Fellowship.
Meets every Wednesday morning at the Coral Gables Congregational Church,
3010 DeSoto Blvd., North across the street from the Biltmore Hotel in Coral
Gables. Group is open to new members.
Friendship Stars
History: This group grew out of Beginning and Advanced Quilting classes taught
by Phyllis Salt. They invited others to join and they grew.
Group's Accomplishments: Working on community quilts, items for the quilt
show boutique and personal items. They teach at schools, go on road trips to
quilt shows, art museums, and celebrate their member's birthdays.
Meets Tuesday evenings on the first and third of each month, usually meets at
rotating locations.
Group is not open to accept new members at this time
Heart-in-Hand Quilters
History: July 2005 started with five members.
Purpose and Activities: Members have support for finishing projects, they make
beginning quilt blocks and sampler quilts.
Group's Accomplishments: Created and donated two auction pieces for Quill
fest; six basic blocks by each member, many show and tells, and show and
helps.
Group is willing to mentor a newly formed group.
Material Chicks
History: Began meeting in 2006
Purpose and Activities: Work mainly on their own work and take trips to quilt
shows and fabric shops. They are planning a trip to the Houston Show next year.
Group's Accomplishments: Camaraderie. Sharing quilting ideas, knowledge,
and skills. Develop new friendships.
Meets weekly on Tuesday mornings 10:00 am - 2:00 pm or whenever. They
rotate through member's homes.
Group is open to accept a few new members.
We Care Quilters
History: They morphed into "We Care Quilters" from a small group as they
wanted to make quilts for Bay Point School, whose motto is "I Love."
Group's Accomplishments: They have delivered over 300 quilts to the school in
over five hears. The group also dedicated their time in making quilts for
wounded soldiers. Those quilts are sent to various medical hospitals through
the Quilts of Valor Organization each year.
Meets monthly on the third Thursday morning all year round.
Group is open to accept new members, they must be members of Ocean
Waves and adopt the Bay Point School Charity as the main interest.
Miami Art Quilters
This new group is open to Ocean Waves members.
The group's activities include hands-on workshops, sharing techniques, learning
about the world of art quilts, working together on projects, and providing a
positive forum for creativity.
Note: Some small groups are full and some are open to invite new members.
Members new and old, are encouraged to bring your ideas to our guild
meetings about what you would like in a group. New groups were organized
this year at our Annual Tea Party, where we drew maps to bring members
together in their geographical areas.
