Ocean Waves Chapter, #296, was founded in January 1985, and chartered by the National
Quilting Association on May 1, 1985. Our Chapter goals are to promote interest in all aspects
of quilt making, to allow members to develop skills, and to display their creations. We hold
monthly meetings, publish a newsletter and website, sponsor a bi-annual quilt show, and
organize quilt trips and workshops. At our monthly meetings current information about the
activities of other national, state, and local quilters and quilt groups is discussed and
displayed. Ocean Waves has over 150 members with a monthly attendance around 70
members. Anyone interested in quilts or quilt making is invited to become a member,
regardless of skill level or area of interest. Classes and workshops cover a wide range of
quilting fiber art; for those that want more information on a subject, our library of about 1100
books may help.
Each year Ocean Waves members gather together for camaraderie and community service,
sharing their talents and each others company in making quilts for school children, community
homes and for families, as well as individuals, in crisis. Guild members provide quilts to the
Home of the Brave Project, the Battered Women's Shelter, and last year to victims of
Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, guild members designed and completed quilts for our yearly
chapter opportunity quilt, and have produced reproduction quilts for historical projects.
